From the last decade of the 20th century (1990s) to now, 29 countries have formed or become independent.  Here is a chart showing the country's name, former affiliation, and date of independence.  The accompanying map gives the country's location.

• Yugoslavia officially became known as Serbia-Montenegro on February 4, 2003.
• East Timor is officially named Timor-Leste.
