In previous editions of The Mapping Specialist there have been stories outlining two meetings that Mapping Specialists holds every year. They are the Strategic Planning Meeting, required of all managers, and the Annual Meeting attended by all Mapping Specialists' staff. These meetings are used to plan for the future and inform our employees of company direction and industry trends. However, the Annual Meeting serves one other purpose: to recognize two individuals from Mapping Specialists who have performed "above and beyond" during the previous year.
Two awards are announced at the annual meeting. Those awards are the "Onno Brouwer Excellence in Cartography Annual Award" and the "Leadership Award." The Onno Brouwer Award is given in recognition to an employee who has produced outstanding work and exhibited a positive spirit throughout the year. The award is named in honor of one of the founders of Mapping Specialists--without whose foresight this article probably would not have been written. Onno is also the individual from whom Jeff Kranz purchased the company in 1991. To honor Onno and his contributions to the company, Jeff initiated the award at the 1992 Annual Meeting. The award has been presented to an employee every year since. A three-member committee of the management team chooses the recipient. The Leadership Award was instituted at the 1996 Annual Meeting to award an employee for their leadership within the company during the previous year. Jeff Kranz chooses the recipient.
Both awards are presented during the last one-half hour of the annual meeting. Jeff presents both awards by calling the individuals to the podium, presents each with an engraved plaque, as well as a cash award. The plaques are permanently displayed in MSL's conference room and are only removed for new names to be added and for the presentation at the annual meeting.
These presentations are a very important part of MSL's Annual Meeting. While other issues and topics covered are important to the company and its employees, few topics have the meaning of these awards. Employees anxiously await the presentations and enthusiastically salute the recipients.
