MSL has an Internet committee that meets quarterly to review sites for staff use. In previous issues (Vol. VII, No. 1, June 1999 and Vol. IX, No. 1, Summer 2001) we have recommended some Internet sites to our clients that MSL uses on a regular basis. As many of you know, the Internet is changed more than a newborn baby is. Here are some sites that we have reviewed and recommend for general interest and utility.
David Rumsey Collection: http://www.davidrumsey.com
This is a private collection of more than 5500 map and atlas images from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
The site provides high resolution digital facsimiles with an well-organized browser. Its quality is outstanding, though the maps are limited in scope.
Maporama.com: http://www.maporama.com/share
If you require detailed city/street maps for places outside the US and Canada, one can find it here. There are detailed city maps for fifteen countries.
Afghanistan: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/afghanistan/maps.htm
Global Security hosts this site. There are many, many maps of the country with a variety of themes including ethnicity, economy, cities, and military activity. It is updated regularly.
Global Statistics: http://www.mindspring.com/~gwil/statoids.html
This is a portal page to countries. It links to the CIA World Factbook, the NIMA (BGN) names database, official country statistics, such as Statistics Finland, and other geographic/cartographic information.
