What can a map show?

The election map below shows which states' popular vote went to each candidate.  The map of Wisconsin to the right shows the popular vote by county.  While more counties voted Republican, most of the larger population centers voted Democrat, thereby giving Wisconsin's 11 electoral votes to Al Gore.

More detailed maps, like the one above, can reveal trends and patterns which are not obvious at first glance.

New technologies allow us to produce maps of current events almost immediately after the event occurs.  Because of rapid improvements in computer technology in the last few years, cartographers are able to take data distributed through published reports including over the Internet to produce maps for publication very quickly.  These maps were produced within 24 hours of the data being available.  Of course, some of the data shown were not available until well after the election.
