Though the world is not engaged in a "world war", many reaches of the globe are involved in conflict, both internal and cross-border. Violent conflict is present on every continent save Antarctica. Below are mapped the areas of the world in which armed conflict prevails -- without an end in sight. To assist American travelers, the U.S. Department of State issues travel advisories regularly in two forms, 1) travel warnings and 2) public announcements. These are mapped below as soon-to-explode bomb and banned luggage symbols respectively.

The State Department issues a "travel warning" when it recommends that Americans avoid a certain country. The list is updated regularly and has an indefinite duration.
"Public announcements" are used to spread information quickly about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term conditions. These announcements have date of issue and an expiration date. It is possible that there are both travel warnings and public announcements for any given country though this is unusual.
Since both warnings and announcements are timely information, the State Department posts this information on its web site. http://travel.state.gov/warnings_list.html
